Caustic
soda, also known as sodium hydroxide, is an odorless,
highly corrosive, non-flammable white solid. It is generally produced as flakes
or shiny pellets that make a slippery solution because it is highly
water-soluble. The 50% concentration of caustic soda is slightly viscous in
nature. It is widely used as a general-purpose industrial as well as a
commercial chemical in several process industries.

The growing consumption of PVC will
directly influence the demand for chlorine and subsequently increase the
production of caustic soda during the forecast period. For instance, in 2018, Shaheen announced
to build a chemical complex at Khalifa Industrial Zone (KIZAD) in Abu Dhabi,
the UAE, with an approximate investment of $1.08 billion. This chemical complex
will be focused on the production of ethylene dichloride, caustic soda, and
chlorine.
Approximately 20% of the chlorine is
used in the manufacturing of PVC in the US. Fire resistance, high durability
and strength, and chemical resistance are some of the key properties of PVC,
making it favored in
industries such as building and construction, as well as the industrial sector.
In addition, the lightweight nature of PVC makes it favored in
the automotive and transportation industries. Increase in the demand for PVC is
expected to support the growth of the
caustic soda market at a CAGR of 2.48% during the forecast period.
